The School Background
Lutheran church special school for the learners with mental disabilities is a public mixed day and boarding school. The school was founded in 1980 by Lutheran Church Missionary, currently the school is under the Ministry of Education. Capacity -150 pupils
The school Is situated within Kisumu Town along Ondiek highway opposite Moi stadium just next to Nakumatt mega city at Kachok.
The School Management
The school is managed by the Board of Management (B.O.M) with the assistance of parents association (PA) with the support from the sponsor and the ministry of education. The school observes strictly the persons with disabilities ACT NO.14 of 2003, which provides for the rights of persons with disabilities as well as the mechanism for their rehabilitations and seeks to achieve equal opportunities for them.
- 1) School integration Programs
Several learners have been integrated into the regular program in the neighboring schools ie. Joyland Special School for Physically impaired, Pandpieri comprehensive School, Kisumu Union Primary School.
- 2) Community Based rehabilitation (CBR)
Through this program sixty eight (168) student have managed to get into the world of work such as hotel attendants, cobblers newspaper vendors, Learner support Assistant, shoe shiners, loom work, poultry attendant at a local university, Agriculture
- 3) Scouting & Guiding.
Our students have successfully participated in both local and international competitions ie, 4” African scouts Jamboree in 2000 and the 75th Anniversary for Girl Guide Association.
- 4) Sporting Activities
Our students have effectively participated in local sporting activities i.e. National County Games (KIPIDSA) Some of the students have represented the country in international competitions (special Olympics). They have also participated in creative activities up to National and county drama and music festivals.

Our Admission is done through the educational Assessment and Resource Centers (EARCs) country wide.

- 1) Teaching/learning Aides for schools on order.
The school designs and produces teaching/learning Aides for schools on order.
- 2) Hiring of facilities.
For wedding and meetings the hall are available on weekends and holidays.
Our hostels are also available for the students at the local. University for Parallel and Diploma programmes.
- 3) Study center.
School provides favourable programmes that have attracted institutions of higher learning to conduct their programmes for their students in teaching practice (TP) and attachments. Some of the institutions that send their students to our school include:Maseno University,Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of science and technology (JOOUST) Medical training centre’s in western Kenya e.g. MTC Kisumu, Nyabondo, Tenmwek.Kaplong MTC.

- :- In service program for needy groups dealing with children with learning difficulty
- :- Students from abroad on Internship e.g. Finland, Holland.
Sweden, Germany and Denmark.
Kenya Institute of Persons with Disabilities (KISE) for teaching practice. (TP)
Polytechnics for attachment (Kisumu Polytechnic).
Co-curricula activities includes games and athletes, scouting and guiding, music and drama, 4K club and health club, guidance and counseling club. They are meant to create exposure, enjoyment and physical development & spiritual to amend moral development of the learners.
The curriculum is divided into three main areas;
- Academic curriculum (CBC) stage Based
The academic curriculum encompasses the subjects like mathematics, English, Kiswahili, and ICT, reading, writing and AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communications) among others
- Social curriculum
The social curriculum includes social skills, communication, Life Skills etc.
- Vocational curriculum
The vocational curriculum encompasses skill areas that would expose the learners to the world after graduation from the school. These include woodwork, poultry, agriculture, tailoring, garment making.
Computer Lab
The school has established a well vibrant and furnished computer laboratory. This facility serves as learning center of all students who attend lessons at specific and designated periods. This has proved to enhance learning and teaching of various subjects offered in the curriculum for learners with mental disability
Challenges
With the inception of free primary education (FPE), the demand for expansion and provision of facilities is enormous, these include among others:
- 1) Most students are vulnerable and orphans
- 2) Lack of permanent homes for our graduating students
- 3) Inadequate job opportunities for our graduates
- 4) Lack of enough space for expansion
- 5) Lack of school bus for transport
- 6) Inadequate classrooms
- 7) Inadequate foodstuff for the feeding program
- 8) Lack of school hall for recreation
- 9) Inadequate teaching and learning resources
- 10) Lack of market for the product from the students work/products
- 11) Negative attitude from potential employers
- 12) Lack of physiotherapy services.
Unresponsive society towards disability in general but more specifically ‘mental disability.
- 1) To provide basic academic skills to enable learners communicate effectively.
2) To develop the learners ability to use their manipulative skills with minimal support.
3) To provide learners with vocational skills to enable them fit in the world of work.
4) To promote and encourage learners to respect and preserve environment
- 5) To provide spiritual nourishment and acknowledge the existence of God.
- 6) To enhance social interaction, positive self image and self esteem.
- 7) To advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities including political and civil rights.
- 1) Need to expand and to cater for all students who have qualified to be in school but still on the pending list due to limited space.
- 2) Plan to construct more classes and a play ground for recreation.
- 3) Construction of show room to display pupil’s work.
- 4) Plan to expand vocational program to include leather work, bead work, wearing, laundry work, rope making and machine knitting.
- 5) Purchase of school bus for educational services
- 6) Construction of adapted swimming pool for hydrotherapy.
- 7) Construction of a school hall.
- 8) Construction of resource center which will double up as a library
This is a day traditionally set in the school calendar to be observed every year.
Main activities includes charity walks, open sales, film shows, songs, dances, drama, raffles.
Any donations and contributions, financial and in any kind is highly welcomed.
